Came home tonight to our beloved Bean floating at the top of the tank. This is not normal behavior for him. He was fine and eating yesterday but not interested in eating tonight. I missed a water change but other than ammonia being high, everything else looked good. I did a 1/4th water change tonight. He did move back down to the bottom of the tank. He’s on a diet of blood worms and occasionally brine shrimp. I noticed tonight that the skin on his sides looks wrinkly. I know he’s been eating so I don’t think he’s malnourished. I don’t think he has fungus. His gills look the same. I can’t get a good pic yet. Any suggestions?

always best to do a 50% water change on a axie tank because of the amount of nitrates produced, what is your ph, temp, ammonia and nitrite levels, also have you got a air stone in the tank.

So the nitrates were off the charts. I’ve got him in the fridge and completely cleaned out the tank (there was hidden decomposing food) and started over with bottled water. I added some plants and a bubble stone. He does have some gill loss and opaque eyes but is not floating in the fridge. How long should I fridge him before I add him back to the tank?

please go to axolotl.org and under requirements look into using either holtfreters solution or one of the modified solutions especially if you are using bottled water.
