I have a spotted salamander that i just got a few days ago. For some reason when i put dead food he wont eat it. Now im not sure about the Alive food because they always hide and stuff. And he is really shy when i look into the habitat he hides under his favorite rock. I don't hurt him, or pick him up, or anything that could fix me as a "bad guy" to him. Is there any way to get him to warm up to me so i can see him better? I'm stumped because i have all of his habitat all the same as in the store and feed him the same food. Please help.

This species is pretty notorious for being shy.

They also don't usually eat food that isn't live and wiggling.

What is your set up like?

well ive got a coconut fiber substratum (or how ever you spell it) and ive got 2 large rock hiding spots. 1 of them is in the middle with a live plant next to it near his soaking bowl. the other (his favorite) is on the side of the tank where he hides at he has burrowed under it enough to where he can not be seen without a light shining in there.

Just make sure the coco fiber doesn't get too dry. I usually mix mine with organic top soil (I use EarthGro brand from Home Depot). It holds moisture better that way.

Try to feed it in the evenings. The less you disturb the tank the better. Wait til it gets dark and quiet, and try dangling a juicy nightcrawler right at the end of the burrow. This could take a couple of weeks, but you might entice it into eating for you.

I've noticed he is eating live food at night alone but he always hides from me. Thanks for the tip ill have to try it out next time im out and about.
