I want to add some shrimp in my tank to help keep it clean and to speed up my cycle. I have heard about diseases and am apprehensive. Am I running a huge risk buying ghost shrimp from the pet store? I am transferring my babies to a bigger tank the only thing changing is different sand. My cycled filter, ornaments and water will be transferred. How bad of a crash am I to expect?

Well the shrimp won't help cycle..? I'm not sure what your thoughts were on that...Also they really don't clean the tank as they don't actually eat algae unless they're starved, they'll eat whatever's leftover by the axies though. I have ghost shrimp in my tank but you do need to quarantine them for 2-4 weeks. Also maybe look at the quality of the fish and stuff (namely like african dwarf frogs, I'd think whatever diseases they carry could more easily transfer to an axie as they're both amphibians) in the same tank at the store, if they don't look good I'd either wait and not get the shrimp or definitely quarantine for longer. If you're moving the same filter then I wouldn't expect a crash bigger than what you'd get with a regular water change when you might have to rinse the sponge or something.

OK so I did not see this and wasted $2 on shrimp. I'm just gonna throw them out. I wanted to know if I should wash the cartridge or just leave it for a week or so to help cycle the tank.

You can keep the shrimp in a separate tub, they don't need much, and then put them in with the axies after quarantine. But the axies will eat them sooner or later.

Don't clean your filter, it'll upset the cycle even more. And remember to keep an extra close eye on the water parameters for a couple of weeks incase your cycle crashes.

Thanks! So how long is quarantine and can I just give them chopped worm instead of buying food for them?

A few weeks should be enough for quarantine.

They eat pretty much anything, worms (dead) or axie pellets are fine. Add some plants in the tub too for them to hide in. Remember to do regular water changes and don't put in too much food to avoid problems with their water parameters.

They are now in their own tub with sand and a hide (I have no plants). They are eating chopped worms and carrots

I have two cartridges in my filter. A washable one and a bio cartridge for bacteria colonization. The washable one has gone a month without being touched. It's filthy. Should I wait to scrub it since I dont want to delay the cycle of my new tank even tho I have the bio?

no offense but the word cartridge is concerning... and I'm not sure I have any idea what you mean by a washable cartridge? I've had filters with cartridges and I know what you mean they do get gross! when you can I would just try and replace them with a simple filter sponge (i.e. not one you wash dishes with) or with some ceramic media (personally I only gently rinse my sponge like every 4 months and it hasn't ever gotten as gross as my cartridges and I've never really cleaned my ceramic stuff, dirt just doesn't get on that it just ends up in the bottom of the filter and I can just dump that stuff out) but until then you could take a cup of tank water and take the cartridge to the sink and pour the tank water over the cartridge and gently squeeze it a little and it shouldn't be too big of a hiccup.

I also got really upset after you said you were gonna throw them out :( but glad to see you didn't. I used to feel the same way about them like oh well but now they started breeding in my axie tank and I think the babies are just about the cutest things they're nearly microscopic they're so tiny! I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy mine :)
