Hi guys, i have currently go a 3ft tank cycling at the moment for my three little monsters, i just bought a new filter and the flow it creates is really really strong, so i'm going to have to make a spray bar, my dad is going to help me and i'll make it run the length of the tank i think. But anywho, lol sorry back to the point i was thinking of putting some shells in there just for something a bit different, but are they safe? i was going to boil them and scrub them will that be ok? i've never used shells before in a tank and i just wanted to check. i'll post some pictures as soon as i can.

Sea shells are made of calcium carbonate. This will dissolve in your tank and raise the carbonate hardness (axies seem to like hard water), in addition to raising the pH slightly. The carbonate will help to buffer against any acidic pH swings though. Overall, they're okay to put in your tank.

they should be ok. Plus it will give them an extra hiding spot. Joan s is right it may rise some of the levels. Other than that GOOD LUCK!!

I have loads of shells in my tank.

They haven't caused any problems.

They haven't raised the PH though....it was 7.2 four months ago and its the same now, the shells were added two months ago.
