i am beginning to wonder what exactly i bought from the dealer in florida-these were labeled as black hynobids but as you can see one is starting to turn brown-sort of like what you would expect a tokyo to do .......these are bigger than the others i got that were labeled 'tokyo' hynobids....

two males and one female in this batch are very good weight -here is a difference photo of a male and female torso-the female is on the left, with the lighter belly area

here are the graphic details, vent shots showing differences-the females vent is on the right

Parsi, my guess for the browner one would be H. lichenatus.
for the dark one I have no exact idea : nigrescens or retardatus maybe ?? THe skin is reflecting too much to be sure.

are there 'dealers' and 'amphibian shows' in the uk? how do you find out about them?

ive tried doing searches on the net but only american ones come up.

Hai Jenny, Hynobidae are not that often offered in the pettrade. aparently the US from now till then has an import occuring. Overhere in Europe I have hardly seen any Japanses hynobid enter.
Offspring is however mostly offered in the various European breeding circles. The circles of keepers having some hynobidae is getting larger , partly due to the fact that some of these species are quite hardy (like H. dunni .. which is my flagship as to speak). I've also noticed an increased interest in those species over the last 3 years when attending Gersfeld.

Jenny,
There are amphibian dealers here in the UK (check the testimonials section of this site) there are also numerous shows but they are kept low profile and to get in you would have to be in an association such as the BHS, IHS, FBH, PRAS, etc.

The difference between cloacas is quite noticeable - that 'y' shape in the female is very distinctive.
Do you think the same applies to other Hynobids?
Chris

i need to take my brain in for a tune up -i got the photos mixed up, well my left and right mixed up..the male is the one with the 'y' shaped vent on the right, the female is on the left, just like in the shot above

Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!
