Hello, Im new to the forum. I have done searches but cant find anything on this...

I am looking into getting some alpine newt eggs to try and hatch myself. I havent kept them before but wanted to give this ago.

I was wondering how I go about cycling the water for them though? I have kept fish before so is it similar to that? I had some filter media from an already established tank to speed up the cycling for them.

Can I do this with newts water? If not, how do I go about preparing the water before I get the eggs?

Thanks alot :)

How you keep the eggs isn't very important. Just a plastic tub open to the air will be fine until they hatch. But you do want to have a cycled tank ready for when they hatch. If it were me, I would go ahead and use filter media (and especially live plants) from an established tank. There are some folks who may point out the risks in doing this - the chance of transferring some pathogen or parasite from your established newts. However, I feel that the benefits of using a cycled tank outweigh these risks. You have to decide that for yourself.

Yes I read through that a few times but couldnt see anything about preparing the water.

I dont know anyone with newts, would it be an idea to ask if someone could post me some water and live plants from their newt tank?

I know people used to do that with fish.

So the eggs can just go in dechlorinated tap water? Is shop bought dechlorinator OK for the eggs?

Thanks alot :)
