I have heard a lot of different things on what to use on the bottom of my tank I believe sand looks to be the best what things should I look for when buying it ?

There are lots of posts in the axolotl tank set-ups that recommend the correct type of sand. Have a browse through and you should find the advise you're looking for, and maybe some brand names.

I general go for aquarium sand from an aquatics shop, or alternatively children's play sand from a DIY shop (bizarrely it was cheaper for me to buy aquarium sand but just buy whatever you find). These products tend to have been treated with fewer chemicals and are safe for an aquarium (of course you must wash the sand first regardless).

Please try to stay away from the product 'Tahitan Moon Sand' as there is a thread in this forum describing an axolotl which had to be euthanased as it had a perforated bowel caused by a tiny but sharp grain of sand. This sand appears to be very sharp and dangerous. Even so, any brand of sand can be rough and as long as it does not feel too course when you run your hands through it (should just feel like ordinary beach sand) then it should be OK.

bare tank is axtreamly easy to clean whitch is why people like it, but it looks ugly and many people may not know later on in life u will stress ur axo out because it has no traction. best way to go is sand, personally i like white sand. best sand to get is play sand or carbian sand from a LFS, i would go with white play sand if i were u because play sand at lows and white sand at the fish store all come from the carabians only diffrence is u have to wash ur play sand while the one is the fish store is already done for u, also u can get 50 lbs for $6 rather than 50 lbs for 200
