sand or large gravel

i have the gravel in there at the moment but all the old blood worm just jest mushed up into it and its hard to clean. DO you think sand would be a better idea for Chinese firebelly newts
 
I use sand for my Cynops. I think it looks better and is easier to clean than any other substrate. Gravel isn't too bad to clean but it does require gravel vacuuming while sand can usually be spot cleaned with a turkey baster. The one thing you really want to stay away from is the large river rocks they sell which are usually over an inch in diameter. These are a real pain to clean as siphons don't work well on them.

The choice is up to you, but I personally find sand to be much easier to maintain.
