FINALLY!!! After going from evil gravel to large glass stones that are a nightmare to keep clean and I lost count of how many "makeovers" in between . . . . . SAND - GLORIOUS SAND!!

Oh, and another pic of the tank as it looks now with Lotle in it. And half of Falkor anyway (heh heh)

what kind of sand is it ?

I got the sand at my local hardware store - Bunnings Hardware House for any fellow Aussies out there. It's actually meant for use when planting Bonsai. But, it's from a company called "Tuscan Paths" here is a link http://www.tuscanpath.com.au/topframe.html

It washed really quickly, didn't take long for the water to run clear, and it's less than $2 per kg (seemed cheap to me).

And Theresa, I will ask Lotle and Falkor if they would like a visitor sometime . . . LOL

P.S Thanks guys!

thx for the info Joanne, but i just brought 25kg's of pool filter sand to replace the sand i already have as i found it to be too fine and having problems with it

hmmm just had an idea

i might go half to two thirds at the back with pool filter stuff and half to a third at the front with the white stuff like an arch affect bordered with rocks, if u know what i mean..

I just changed to sand too!! My guy is not back home yet though, I hope he loves it!

That is a great tank joanne. Your axies really stand out with the white.

Just wondering joanne, how long did it take for all that sand to settle? I got some of the tuscan paths sand and I am washing out in a bucket. So far some of it floats but I want to know how long it'll take for it to all sink when it goes in the tank. I was also wondering if some of it will end up floating again if it gets stirred up? Your tank does look great btw.

Nice tank & i like that plant, so colorful

Can you tell me the name of that colorful plant and where did you get it from?

The sand only took an hour or so to settle when I added it. I put it in using a 1 litre jug and by filling the jug with the wet sand, I kept it upright until it was lowered to the bottom, then inverted it tipping the sand straight onto the floor of the tank. A bit slower than just dumping it in but worth it for the fact that it settled quickly and the water didn't really even get cloudy at all.

As for the colourful plant, it is fake. All of my plants are fake cause my Axolotls have a habit of killing my live plants with kindness!

They just love playing and sleeping in them so much that all the live plants I have tried broke and died within a couple of weeks

Or I would come home to find them floating around the tank, no matter how well I thought they were planted!

I bought it at my local pet shop and think it is from "Aqua One". But they have a web site so maybe check it out on 'google' or 'yahoo'.

Your tank is gorgeous! Mine is not yet set up, but Im purchasing it today and I totally want to base my tank off of how yours looks, I love the super white sand with the colorful plants.
I just need to find the white sand...somewhere.

I just set up my tank. I got about 30 Axolotl eggs from my science teachher, I think over half of them are dead but have lef them in as to not disturb the tank too much. I'v got live plants that the eggs are att. to and approx 2-3cm pebbles in the bottom. Does it make a difference between pebbles and sand cause that white sand looks great.}

Yes. Pebbles can be swallowed and cause impaction, which may lead to death. Even big sand particles can cause problems to small larvae. I raised my larvae on bare-bottom substrate until they were about 3 inches long.

i would love to have that sort of sand in my tank i have gravel at the moment if there is anyone out there that could tell me where i could get that sort of sand i would be gratefull
