Hi all,
Ive got 3 fire salamanders, and recently changed the set up of their enclosure, which included adding a section of sand substrate (which, in hindsight was a bad idea, they hated it so i've already covered over it!). However, they seem to have accumulated sand in their eyes in the process, and im not sure if this will be an irritant or not, they do seem to be sitting around with their eyes closed, but they did that most of the time anyway!

I'm wondering whether i should just wait for the sand to fall away, or do something to remove it from their eyes, and if so, what exactly?

thanks for any help with this!

Unless you're convinced they're in distress I'd be tempted to let them sort it out themselves.I suppose you could dip them quickly in de-chlorinated tap water just to rinse it off (they're not designed for aquatics so don't leave them in the water for more than a second). As they spend much of their life underground they're well adapted to the problems of dirty eyes. If they were being irritated I think they'd show some signs of trying to clear it.
