When choosing sand to use in my axies' tank, what grade is ok? Is course sand ok or does it need to be ultra-fine grade? By course grade, I mean 1 step larger particles then play sand, nowhere near even the tiniest pea gravel; just course enough that it doesn't compact like fine sand does.

I hopefully pick up my 4-month-old babies at the weekend and, following advice from both breeder and from here, they'll be starting life with me in a tub. Meanwhile, I'll be setting up their proper tank so that it can cycle and the plants can become established, so the sooner I know what sand to get the sooner I can start the setting-up process.

Thanks in advance.

Ih, here are my 3 babies... Mine are the 'freckled' leucistic, the golden albino and the palest of the wild-types (the bottom one).

I have used several types of aquarium sand, mainly to mix the colours to get the effect I wanted. I would say that the black sand is not as fine as the sort of sand you'd find in a children's play pit.
Certainly worth getting the advice of some of the more experienced keepers though.

Your little ones look lovely. This is a very exciting time, and I hope that we see lots of pictures when you get your axolotls.

Thanks for your reply. I'll definitely post lots of photos when they come.

Anyone else got any input on the sand?

I had a bare bottom tank for years, but recently added natural colored play sand. I really like it. But it took ages to rinse clean. Like forever...... Worth it though, I think it looks great.

yes if u use any type of sand that isnt specifically for aquariums than it takes forever too clean. I used pool filter sand in mine and the coarseness grade was perfect and didnt take as long to clean as regular play sand
