Sand for 3 inch axolotl or bare bottom

Hiya all. Im new to the forum and these wonderful pets. I've been researching here and have decided on sand as a substrate. I pick up the little guy/gal on Thursday. It is 3 inches at the moment and so my question is, is this big enough to go on sand right away or not?

Wait until it is a few inches larger before introducing substrate into the tank. They are little hoovers and at this size even tiny grains of sand can cause impaction.
