Hey guys, so quite a few things happened today, one of which is the dreaded salt bath. I put my axolotl in 1 quart of her clean, dechlorinated water with 2 teaspoons of aquarium salt. She did not like it at all at first but calmed down. She had a little air stone with her and I kept her in for 10 minutes. Afterwards I transferred her to her tub, which had 2 gallons of clean water. She got a worm for being a good girl and it didn't even have time to hit the bottom of her tub before grabbed it. She spent about a half hour in her tub while I cleaned her tank.
All of this is because she has had gill fungus on and off since late August. I am very upset over it. The one time she had it on the tip of her left, top gill stalk. It went away, then she got it on her right upper gill stalk, in the middle. Then it fell off and her little weakened filaments are left behind. She's started to heal there but now she has it on the stalk under it. She doesn't appear to be bothered by it. She isn't scratching at it, she isn't lethargic, she's eating, and she's responsive when I come to her tank. Anyways, she has high nitrates like all the time now. What am I doing wrong? I did a 50% water change today. She has a charcoal end on her one filter, and a zeolite attachment on her other one. I try to do a water change every 4-5 days. I feed her once every other day. Usually 3 pellets and a small earthworm, or just the pellets, it depends.
She's two years old, and she is my favorite. I don't want to take her to a vet because the vets in my area aren't letting humans/families in with the pets. They make you wait in the car and I am too worried to let her go in alone. Anyways, what I read was to do 2 salt baths a day for 4 days straight, then do 3 days with just 1 bath. Am I doing too much salt, too little salt? If you have experience, please tell me.
With that said, my axolotl is a little angry at me. She's only turning to face me, not coming up to the surface to say hello, which I guess I deserve. I don't want to give her any more salt baths today. I wrote on my calendar when her first one is so like, if this doesn't go away, I can really start it. So anyways, does anyone know what causes this fungus? Should I even be concerned about it if she's acting fine? I've attached some pics, the first one being her right before her salt bath. You can clearly see the blob of fungus. The second pic is from the day before her fungus was noticeable. The last photo is of her current tank set up, with her ice packs chilling her tank. I have 2 fans, and I have 2 filters in at all times but I put in a third, small one, to see if it made a difference. I really cleaned her tank today, took out her driftwood, her rock, etc, so the water wasn't particularly clear, the 3 filters fixed it and I took out the third one once its job was done. Oh and she's got a food dish that we're trying to get her to understand.
Please let me know what you guys think. PLEASE. Should I hold off? Stick with the baths? What? Please. I need some advice.
*EDIT* I went to feed her another small worm, that she took from her dish like a good girl, and when she lunged, her gill fungus fell off. I attached 3 new photos of it. Do these look like anything you guys know?
