Hi,

this morning I visited one of my favorite S.s.t. habitats. (Germany, NRW, Solingen - Bergisches Land)
Here a pic of a shady brook. In summer it has only few water, in spring it has a lot and strong current:

And a part of it where I found 5 or 6 larvae. Greatest diameter 1m:

Now some pics of the S.s.t larvae:

Later I found this large male (18 cm):

Hey Mike,

it is just the larvae that inhabit streams, the adults don't. Only the female enters the water with her back to deposit the larvae. By the way..in many places in Europe Salamandra salamandra females deposit their larvae in standing waters. In middle Europe Salamandra salamandra mostly lives in nice dark and cool beech-oak forests like on the picture, a very typical habitat for them.

I like the look of that male!!! I wish we had things in the wild like that in Australia!!!

Well, I wished we had bluetongues and varanid lizards over here.. but hey, luckely there are air planes to get us there!

Now I continue!

In a very similar hiding place (near) I found this:
Zootoca vivipara, female with parasites:

(Sorry John - I know!
She has a tail but is no newt or salamander.
I only post it to show that this little, vivipar lizard often lives in the same habitats.)
