Question: Salamander went under

Hi all,

So my salamander assumedly burrowed on November 24. I came home one day and there was a big mound of dirt and no Timmy, so I'm guessing that's where he is.

I just wanna know he's ok. I won't bother him if that's what he needs to do. I'm a little concerned cuz there are some tiny bugs (fruit flies?) who have been chilling over there, though they were there long before he went underground.

I don't think you have to worry, lots of salamanders bury themselves for hibernation but I don't know about the flies. maybe you could ask a veterinarian. what kind of salamander is it?

Do you know what species Timmy is? How big is he? What's the temperature of the surroundings?
Sounds like perfectly normal behaviour if we are talking tiger.

I THINK he's a tiger? We took him in when he got grazed by the lawnmower and lost his foot. Last I saw him he fit in my hand. Here's a picture -

I don't know the exact temperature atm but it's cool, we're in Canada and it's -28/-6 outside.

Perfectly normal behaviour. He could be buried for several weeks or so until he gets hungry.

I have a Tiger Sal and he's been down under for a good week now. I miss him but I know he's doing what they do so I'll see him when he comes up again. I started to get worried until I did some research on the subject. Timmy is lucky and I'm glad you found him.

If you spray the soil lightly before you switch your lights off, you my find that Timmy pops out, especially if there are also some lovely juicy worms there aswell

He'll be fine. I've had my Mole salamanders (Ambystoma talpoideum) go underground for 2+ months at a time without me ever seeing them, and they always come out nice and fat.
You could put some woodlice or worms in there if you want, he may hunt them on his own at night.
