Salamander or mudpuppy?

Well his/her gills seem to be shrinking, but I can't tell if thy truly are or not. The little things on the gills are shrinking. He's grey with black dots but when there's light on him I can see a yellow shine on this skin. He's got 5 toes on the back and 4 on the front
