Salamander living in basement

a friend of mine moved into an old house that sits just off a pond. while moving in she found some salamanders in the basement, she thinks she they are spotted salamanders. a pet shop owner told her to catch them and he'd pay her a pretty penny for them. she decided to try to avoid disturbing them and called me. anyway she does not wish to disturb them she has even put water down for them. she wants to know if they will infest or destroy her home, because she likes her little friends and dosn't want to cage or relocate them since they are doing so good on there own.

They will do nothing more than eat bugs and whatnot. They're not harmful themselves.

I suggest tracking them down in the spring and booting them outside. Or make them pay rent.

(Edit: I just realized this is my 2500th post. I talk too much!)

Joan, you give wonderful advice and insightful posts, its a good thing! Youve helped me on more than one occasion!

Bill, does your freind have any other pets, cats or dogs?? They may become chew toys...and can they get out if they want to? Have you found the source of where they are coming from?

it seems the sals found an opening right next to the sewage pipe. looks like the hole is smaller than they are, but it's all i could find. she has a bird, but i don't think it will be running around in the basement any time soon. he's well watched and has his wings clipped. she did say that one of the sals are big and fat, while the other is skinny and long. the sals don't bother her and when i told her that they eat bugs she seemed to think they are okay to have as free roaming pets. she asked how to take care of them if she was to catch them, so i sent her here.

I would put them back out by the pond.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
