I found this salamander out near a stream in North Carolina, and I think it is a Desmognathus quadramaculatus. This was the only blackbelly salamander I found on my entire trip and I found hundreds of salamanders by that one stream including redback salamanders, slimy salamanders, and plenty of small Desmos. It also seemed quite conspicuous out on the rock compared to the rock flipping I had to do to find every other salamander and it was considerably larger than all others in the area. I'm looking to see if anyone can diagnose a possible cause of death because I found this very sad and I'm hoping a fungus has not been introduced into the area. It had a yellow growth on its side and its front feet were discolored and whitish. Any ideas?
