I'm in the process of upgrading to a 4ft tank. I've been toying with the idea of instead of running 1 large filter, running 2 instead.

My reasoning: here in Aus we're speeding into summer. The chiller I installed for Chernobyl's 2ft tank last summer was pretty much useless, and I had to keep him in a separate tub to keep him cool.

My plan is: have both of the canister filters sit in an esky, with ice in the bottom. As the water passes thru the filter, it *should* get chilled by the ice. I would have an inlet up each end of the tank, and outlets in the center which are muffled to prevent current.

I'm interested in hearing peoples thoughts on whether this would work or not.

Don't see why it wouldn't work, as long as the current is controlled.

Was the chiller a small peltier device, a.k.a. thermoelectric, versus a large compressor-based chiller?

The only concern I'd have is that if the temps are too low in the filter media, that it might have an effect on the bio filter, perhaps slowing it down? Running the output of the filters through a coil of tubing immersed in ice water might be another option. Regulating the temps becomes problematic in either case, although varying the amount of tubing underwater might provide a mechanism for doing so.

Perhaps wiring a solenoid valve to a temp sensor on the filter intake can be used to output water through the "icebox" versus just going straight to the tank? As long as it doesn't freeze when not passing water through it, it would be OK?
