I am desperately trying to make a ringer solution for my newt. He escaped from a temporary tank, went walking and i think became dehydrated and now has bloat, probably from liver damage. I have Aquarium Salts and Baking soda but i cannot find the potassium chloride or the calcium chloride. does anyone know where to find these salts? Is it OK to put my newt in Aquarium salt in the interim? with baking soda?
thank you.

Back when I bought the ingredients from the ringer solution, I think I got the stuff from a some place like ward's biological. Do a google search, and you should come up with something. Also try chemistry supply places. When I was having issues, I would PM or e-mail Ed. He was great help, but doesn`t seem to be too active on the forum anymore. He might be able to tell you whether or not you can use the salts that you have now.

We are working on an article. You may be able to purchase potassium chloride as an mix of 66% as Lo-salt or 50% Solo at a grocery store both food grade and can be used for amphibians and calcium chloride technical grade as de-icer, or granules for small scale dehumidifiers(I've used it but I have qualms about recommending a product not subject to quality control to others). As an interim measure use the aquarium salt at about 8 grams a litre, see what the pH is and if the mix is acid adjust the pH to about 7.2 with the bicarbonate. If you have a formula which uses magnesium sulphate this is obtainable from most pharmacies.

The salt level (osmotic pressure) strength of amphibian(and most other animals) blood is equivalent to about 9g per litre and you should not exceed this level which corresponds to "full strength" Ringer's solution.
