Illness/Sickness: Rescued Axolotl

Hello,

I've rescued this axolotl, it lived with goldfish. The goldfish ate his gills of, and the only food he got was goldfish food. He can't eat much, and only small food for now, but he is eating well. I can see his gills wil grow back, so I am very happy about that. I ceep him in a small container and refresh the water 2 times a day. He gets food 2 times a day, right after the fress water and eats almost everyting. If I find out how to post pictures I will post some. Do you guys have any advice? Once he can eat bigger stuff he will be put on a high fat diet.

Thanks for rescuing her and trying to get her back to health! It sounds like you are doing everything possible to get her well.

She may have parasites from being with the goldfish, but I am not sure if you should deal with that quite yet. Perhaps others will have a different opinion?

I would recommend making sure that you keep your water parameters in check (I recommend API Freshwater Master Test Kit, always buy liquid not strips) and you keep the water temp between 60-68°F. Also if you can, switch him over to night crawlers cut up as soon as possible. They are the best diet for an adult axxie. I offer mine 1/2 a worm cut up into 3-4 peices every day or other day and leave it there for 30 minutes. Anything she doesn't eat after 30 minutes I take out. I also rescued mine and am working her up to a whole worm every 1-2 days. As for anything he might have picked up from the goldfish I don't know anything about. Once he get in better shape moving him into a 10gal-20gal long tank would be recommended. I hope this helps and I hope he's gotten better.
