Repairing Elodea

All my elodea has gone brown over the last couple of weeks. In the last few days i have had several shoots come off the brown stems and grow as much as 2-3cm. Do I leave the brown bits in or trim the new growth off and plant that?

I'm in the same boat. I've broken off the green shoots and they're growing ok, but I'm no expert. I get little roots dangling down from where the new shoots start.

What do you mean going brown? You mean slowly decaying from tip to root? Thats a sign that is dying and attemts to grow new shoots to survive are taken. Are the brown bits just leaves? is so tim it if its the actual root then trimm the shoots and plant them. Make sure the new shoots have leaves or photosynthasis (i cant spell lol) will be hard to take place.

the whole stem (and leaves) are brown except the new shoots coming off the side.

Here is a pic of it.

Cant really see in the pics but it looks like its dieing. Trim the new shoots off and replant them. DOnt worry even if the main shoot isnt dieng the new shoots will still grow to be like its 'parents'.

Gently nip off the new stems, so that the root stays on. This happens occasionally with Elodea, and it's not a big worry. If you had a snail, it would of done the job for you.
But yes, nip em off and chuck out the brown bits.

I find you can pretty much break off the part where the plant is still healthy and plant it. Also look out for any hanging thin white roots, break it just before these start and plant them. I'm no expert but it worked for me.
