Regrowing nipped gills?

I have 2 babies left, both around 2". One had a couple gill stalks nipped off when it was much smaller, over a month ago. I had expected regrowth by now but besides one little wispy strand, nothing seems to be happening. Is there a chance they simply won't grow back?

the gills should grow back but may take time to do so, they may also grow back looking different from before ie.. twin prongs (looking like antlers), pig tails (filaments at end of gill stalks but sparse in middle) etc..
always ensure optimum water conditions and a varied balanced diet.

Thank you, glad they should grow back even if they are funky. They are tubbed with water changes once a day, eating anything they are offered
