In spring I'd like to take my daughter out to teach her about vernal pools. I'd especially like to show her Notophthalmus viridescens, the red spotted newt. I know of a local pond where they are. I feed them bits of chicken liver while catfishing. When could I expect to see them in the spring here in PA? I find northern two lined salamanders (Eurycea bislineata), dusky (Desmognathus fuscus) , red backs (Plethodon cinereus), spotted (Ambystoma maculatum) and in very rarely, the northern red salamander (Pseudotriton ruber ruber).

You can find them year-round. I've got a video of one swimming under ice.
