Hello,

Ive had a newt pet for a few weeks and cant really tell if he's eating or not.

I've tried to feed him some mealworms and he looked like he tried to take a bit of one and then left it alone.....I have some smaller earthworms in the dirt in his tank so could he be eating those? He seems like he does like to dig cause I've seen tunnels he has made through the sides of the tank.

what other things are good to use? It's winter here so there's not really a lot I can get in the wild.

He seems healthy and active and always moves around when I open the lid.....he seems to really like food that moves so would pulling a leg off a cricket make it uninteresting to him?

Thanks for the info

Is the newt an eft? Maybe post a picture of it and its setup.
I wouldn't feed mealworms, they're hard for the newt to digest, uneaten ones will bite newts, and they aren't very good nutritionally either. Crickets are also not very nutritional and will bit the newt if uneaten. What I do is just go to Walmart's fishing section and buy European Nightcrawlers, rinse them off, cut them up and feed them by putting the pieces in a little bowl or with tongs. If the newt is a small eft, it may go for wingless fruit flies that you can often buy at pet stores like petsmart and petco.

I has gotten a small jar of fruit flies from petco but I think a got a bad jar cause the fruit flies didn't seem to be moving. I'll try what you suggested. Thanks
