Today I collected a Northern Red Salamander with gills from a stream in SW Pennsylvania. It is about 4" long. I would like to see it through its transformation to terrestrial phase, then decide whether to keep it or release it. Any advice on habitat and feeding would be appreciated.

If your going to keep it through its transformation I woulden't release back to the wild

So, either release it now or keep it forever. I'm sure there's a good reason for that.
My book says they're fond of earthworms. I'm wondering about feeding it in the aquatic phase, and how important it is to replicate the running water environment it was in several hours ago in the wild.

I'm not sure how much current it likes or requires, I'm sure you can get a better answer if you post in the newt and salamander help section of the forum. As far as earthworms you couldn't be more right, not only do they like them but they are at the top nutritionally as a diet.

Good luck

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
