My male Fire-Bellied Newt Has been having the worst of times, he was kept in poor conditoins at the pet store when I rescued him, when he got home he never seemed to get better. His leg begain to swell then a few bacterial ulcers appeared on the arm, which we promptly amputated. His arm has not even skinned over yet and I am seeing early signs of the same problem on the back leg directly behind the arm that we amputated. He is becoming thin and he does not look good. Other people on this site are having similar problems with this "arm and leg rot"
I think it is a seasonal bacteria
bah, dont listen to me, im a newb, following my instincts
I am probably going to get my poor newt put to sleep, I would rather not see him suffer this way.

Please anybody help me, I dont know what to do!

I currently keep him in a tupper-ware with a damp paper towel, today I gave him a chance to feed, in a kind of salty solution of water,he didnt struggle to do anything just walked around a bit, didnt try to eat. I dont want him to starve...
how would I go about force feeding him?

pet shop syndrome. just keep trying to get him to eat, and keep him cool, and keep his wounds clean. but if he doesn't make it, it's not your fault.

What do i keep the wounds clean with?
nobody told me directly to use a certain product...

I've used hydrogen peroxide, just make sure you rinse well with clean water after applying. you can also use neosporin WITHOUT painkillers to help them heal. And remember, sals are masters of healing and can go some time without eating, a month or more.

his whole body is sweating, he wont open his eyes, and he wont move anything except for his tail a tiny bit.
I am only doing this because he has been through too much for a newt, and I dont want to see him suffer anymore.
Other people are telling me that it is best for him also.

Kaysie>>thankyou so much for trying to help my newt and i through this, we just cant take anymore of it.

My mom brought the "blue juice" home and we euthenized him here, he may have alreay been dead when we did it, but just to make sure, we gave him a dose.
he is buried uderneath our loquat tree

Ofcourse, we can't see the newts with our own eyes and thus depend on your writings here to make judgements. But I'm beginning to wonder how much more advice you'll recieve in the future as it seems you make up your own mind, often much against the advice of respectable 'oldies' here.

I'm not saying that you are a lousy newt keeper, not at all! You were doing good. But I can imagine it's kind of frustrating for the people who offer to help and than see you don't respond as they would expect.

btw: we had this discussion before, maybe you'll find it when you use the search function. I'll repeat the conclusion.
Don't buy newts that are kept in bad conditions - they will often die. Plus, the petshop will see no reason to stop selling ill/poor kept newts as they have customers at hand. It's a circle with only more newt victims.

One last thing; I have had succes with rose water to keep a wound clean. Don't know about Hawaii, but over here you can buy it in any drugstore.
I also noticed that my newt didn't eat a thing until the wound had almost completly healed.

I didnt exactly hear much from you during the ordeal, and I have had this post and many others going for a long time.
Plus you dont really know all of it, hardly anyone could help me before things got so bad they couldnt be helped! (thank you to all who did help, but unfortunately your help came too late) The bacterial infection had spread to all his other legs, he wasnt moving, only twitched when you touched him and he wasnt opening his eyes. When we got home the day we euthenized him he was stiff!I only euthenized him to make sure he was dead before we burried him! He was dead before we even got home.

Im sorry if I seem rude but im just a bit sad and irritable after losing a pet.

My other two females are doing fantastic though! they have both fattened up a bit after being starved to death at the pet store, they seem much more happy and lively.

I haven't been online much lately - but I'm also sure I wouldn't have been able to give you the life saving advice you needed.

I still think it's not smart that you bought skinny fire bellies, but hereby I do want to apologise to you for maybe overreacting - been a bit frustrated lately (nothing to do with you or anyone on this forum, personal stuff). Shouldn't have projected it onto you.

Anyway, glad the others are doing fine, proves you're taking good care of them.
