Hi everyone. I've recently purchased 2 fire belly newts and I just wanted to report what I've seen so far to hear you all's feedback. At first, they were both very active and fast moving when I put them in their tank. They were swimming up against the tank walls without rest for a good 20 minutes. But then one of them settled to the bottom and remained stationary for the next couple hours. The other newt continued to swim around a lot though. The one that stopped moving actually shed his skin later that evening and proceeded to eat it. Since then he hasnot moved around much at all. The more active one shed his skin as well the following day and he too became much less active. Now they both mostly stay on the bottom of the tank with some walking around every once in a while. I did notice that on the newt that shed his skin first (less active one), 2 of his toes appear to be a very pale color, almost white. Is this anything to be concerned about? Also, neither of them have accepted food other than their skin. Comments? Advice? Thanks in advance!

Read through these FAQs, they have some of your questions:
Caudata Culture - Frequently Asked Questions

In terms of behavior, what you describe sounds normal. The white toes could be something to worry about, as many wild-caught newts arrive with flesh-eating infections. Watch this closely.

What are you trying to feed them? They are wild-caught, so they have probably never seen non-live food before. Chopped earthworms or frozen/thawed bloodworms are your best bets.

Be careful to remove all uneaten food from the tank promptly. Leftovers can turn the water toxic, especially in a new setup.

Thanks for the help! I have read through the FAQ's and many of the pages on infections/treatments but I'm just not sure if I should try a salt bath or if I should just wait it out and see if it worsens.
