Question about water temp

Okay, I'm new to this board and Cynops Orientalis. I've read many places that the water temp needs to be under 70, but I can't seem to get the water down past 75 degrees. The little girl I got is 2 inches long (anyone have an idea how old that is?), and she lives in my bedroom. I've put an ice cube into the water, slept with the window wide open (and it's cold here in vermont at night), and used a fan on high speed next to her aquarium, but nothing seems to work. Are there any good tricks I can use to bring the water temp down? Also, I'm in a rather secluded area and would like to know if there is an online store where I can get food items for her. What is the best frozen food that she can eat?

One of the things is, my fiance and I live in the third floor apartment and it might be the neighbors generating so much heat. Also, I've been trying the ice cubes and the fan lately. They bring it down a little. I'm starting to wonder if I have a faulty thermometer. Its one of those flat crystal thermometers and is partially in and out of the water.

Also, we have a ventilated cover for her that is like a screen. Would increasing the water depth make it any cooler?

Well, it turns out her temp is just fine. It was the thermometer that was the problem. Anyone who is interested in getting a newt and maintaining it at the right temperature should not get the flat crystal thermometers that stick to the side of the aquarium. It was at least 10 degrees off.

It is definitely good to warn people about those thermometers. We had one, and it was probably 5 to 10 degrees too warm, so we were worried. They're really easy to break, and you don't realize it. I would encourage people not to use those. I'm glad you got the temperature to normal

Yeah, anyone who wants to use one of those thermometers is going to get a little story from me from now on.

Ok this has me wondering about my thermometer. What kind of thermometer did you replace your old one with and/or what do you suggest I use? Thanks.

Jessica, I used on of those glass thermometers to replace my old one. It has stones in it so that it can stand up in the water. Or you can get one that pretty much just floats in the water. Much more reliable.

Out of all seriousness I don't think I've seen any glass freestanding ones with stones in them. I think mine are glass but have a suction cup for the tank, they're not flat though. The floating kind would work with my newt since I'm not using a filter and he's by himself; but I don't think it'll work with my FBT's as they have a filter and they hop around a lot in their tank. Thanks Corrina.

That should work well. I'm not sure what exactly it is that is in the bottom of my thermometer, but it does look like little stones and they make it so that it can stand up in the tank. Anything that isn't flat and doesn't stick to the wall like the other ones will probably be more accurate.

Ok well I did stop by at the store I got my thermometer at and the packaging does say it's glass. It just always seems to read warmer than it feels. Just guessing at the feeling about 5 degrees, but I'm no expert. Getting close to hot season out here, yea for me, boo for the newt

Thanks again Corrina

I agree. Summer's coming (hopefully soon), and then it'll be more work than it is now to keep the temps down. I found a little fan and have it so that it blows toward Fez's tank, cooling the water temp down about 5-10 degrees. It's pretty helpful.

Someone suggested to me once having two thermometers in the tank, that way when they're off one another, you know something's weirld. I've had the flat, stick to the glass one too and it ended up showing lighting up in 3 different degrees! Glass is mucho better.

Yeah I bugged Jennifer Macke and Ed K. about the cooling down thing. They both told me about getting a fan set up to blow on the tank. I will be getting one sooner than I planned though we're about 10-15 degrees above normal, but good news is we're going down to the 70's this weekend. Even though I like the heat we just had the 60's and then boom the 90's. 90's were a bit much to take this quickly. Luckily the house doesn't seem to be getting hot yet.

The post by Newton had not been up yet when I responded about the fan thing to Corrina but that's a good idea to use two thermometers, thanks Newton.

I would not recommend using the thermometers that stick to the outside of the aquarium as these can be influenced by things outside of the terrarium such as drafts.
Use a thermometer that can actually be physically inside of the enclosure as it will be more accurate.
The average thermometer that you get can vary between three and five degrees F from the actual temperature so using more than one thermometer is always a good idea.

Ok thanks Ed for the info about the 2 thermometers, and in case there is any confusion mine are inside. Thanks
