Quartz sand

I recently tried using the black quartz sand (galaxy) & I was shocked how sharp the individual "grains" are - they are more like shards & I found they stuck to my juvenile axie if he head plowed it - seemed to cling to gill filaments & cause the axie to "fluff his feathers" .... I changed it after 3 days for a very fine white sand - it's perfect & easy to clean

the black quartz sand is actually coal slag! and used in sandblasting, or relabeled as various different things and sold in the aquarium trade. very bad news for axolotls.
the white quartz sand may be just that, quartz. is it round and smooth? also make sure it is not marble sand as that is not PH nuetral.

Thanks guys! Yes, your black sand is very coarse Niki, mine is like the sand in your second pic. Pretty, but gets grubby real quick. At least it makes their poop stand out so I can suck it up with my trusty turkey baster lol!

Ahhhhhhh I see - it makes sense that it's used for sandblasting! When I rubbed it between my fingers it was sharp & nasty
I think the white being easy to see poops is great - the black would've been a poop nightmare I've learned as I've gone (thanks to people here
)- thankfully the black sand was picked up before any harm was done - I would've been devastated if I'd done something to detriment the poor little thing... Must be a toughy because he's still survived my "love" lol<3 >o_o< <3
