Can someone please tell me if it is safe to use pvc fittings for my axies to hide in?? I have washed them in boiling water then put them in declor water . Do they leak anything into the tank? Thankyou.

We've had pvc pipe fittings in our tanks since they were set up over 2 years ago. We preferred them to the aquarium hideouts as they had more interesting and varied shapes. Whether they leach anything, I can't honestly say.

PVC pipe is approved and widely used for carrying tap water for human consumption. It is also widely used to carry water supplies for fish and amphibians in zoos. Almost certainly safe.

Thank you

Thankyou Kapo, and Jennewt.

There also isn't any need to boil them.. PVC is not really stable at temperatures above 140 F and there is a potential for leachates.

A simple bath in a bleach solution and through rinsing followed by air drying until the odor of bleach can no longer be detected is more than sufficient.

Hi Tara you have advice here from three of the most knowledgable people on this site. All I can add is not to use pipes that have been joined using pvc glue/cement. It is extremely toxic and will invariably cause problems.

I use a pvc down pipe cut into a axolotl friendly size with a hacksaw, I then sanded the edges. I then toodles to the fish shop to see that they are selling the exact same thing for about 10 times the price of a hard ware store !
