is it normal for some axies to just put their head facing down when they’re relaxing? mine is doing it, and i rarely see him do it. ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 10 ppm. he just got back into his tank last night after being in the fridge for the weekend due to some constipation. i didn’t feed him as much as he’d usually eat since he just got out. his gills are not curled, his butt is not in the air. i’m just scared that he could be feeling ill from the constipation. hopefully it’s normal, though.

What does having his head down look like? Can you show a picture of the behavior?

Try a water change to bring nitrates down. Send me a photo of your axolotl, I need to see what he looks like. Depending on his behavior, it could be that he has a deformity.

I agree with above requests for pictures. My first thought, however, was of axolotl behavior when they're looking for food on the ground

hi, he stopped after i posted this so i wasn’t able to get a picture. his head down is just kind of him either laying down or walking around the bottom with his mouth to the ground.

i noticed he attacked one of the plants, so he definitely may have been hungry!

Axolotls cannot just keep their head shot upwards all the time, especially when they want to relax.
