I started my axolotl journey with 3 very baby axies, all three were eating bloodworms when I got them. I've been thinking of purchasing some eggs for some time now, anyone have any thoughts about pros and cons of hatching over buying babies? :)

Pros - it makes you appreciate the people who raise them from eggs and do all the hard work for you. ;)

Cons - all the hard work.

If you get satisfaction from the extra challenge of raising them from eggs, then that is a good reason to raise them from eggs.

The axolotls I've purchased from people selling here have been of excellent quality, but if your only option is purchasing from a LFS, you will probably have fewer health worries if you raise them yourself.

If you're ready to put a lot of time and effort into raising them then go for it. But if you're not committed to feeding them and changing their water up to twice a day for the next few months then don't. I've had a lot of fun raising my first batch of eggs and I'm sad I have to sell most of them, but it has been a LOT of work to take care of them. Also make sure you're ready to cull them if they have problems and all the other hard decisions.

Thank you guys for the response, after a lot of research I've decided to buy juveniles again. I work 12 hours a day and I'm afraid I won't have the time do devote to eggs at this time. Maybe in the future.

An excellent decision, given the circumstances.

You could raise small numbers in a naturalistic set up using daphnia etc. Its not much work but does involve some planning.
