What does this mean? Got two Danube crested newts yesterday and the female has looked like this since getting here(she keeps doing the yawn as well)

I forgot to mention she's rather on the thin side too. I can see her hip bones

I don't think it means anything?? But someone else can tell you for certain, I'm sure. I have danubes too and they will occasionally yawn

Poofed* I just noticed the typo lol.
I know they can occasionally yawn, I've seen several of my newts do this. But she has don't it many times since I got them and her neck has been proofed out like that since getting her Wednesday. She's on the skinny side too so I'm just worried something is wrong. She seems to be acting OK though

If it just stays like that theres a possibility that its throat is bloated or something. Has it been eating?

Because the animal is so thin, barring something actually stuck in its throat causing localised infection, I would guess its a symptom of organ failure, possibly due to starvation, but it could also be that an disease of some kind has caused it. I'm not a vet though, so I'm really just guessing based on past experience. The only up to date reference book I have that has a picture of those symptoms says the cause was eventually found to be Ranavirus, so it might be worth taking the animal to the vet, if only for a post mortem, especially if you have other amphibians in your household.

I just got her Wednesday with a male. So I guess I should be worried about him too?
I can't tell if she's been eating or not. As far as I can see, I don't think she has

What have you been feeding? To fatten it up it should definitely be on worm and maybe waxworm if you can get them.

As long as you are sure there's nothing in the mouth or throat thats causing an infection, I would certainly keep them both in strict isolation away from your other phibs if its not too late. Where did you get them? I'd say you have good reason to complain if they were from a shop or dealer.

Bloodworms since getting here. And I got them from Michael Shrom. I've never had a problem getting newts from him before and asked him about it. But thought I'd ask on here as well in case it was something bad as I've never seen any other newts do it for that long before

Bloodworms are nutritionally incomplete and won't get you far in fattening up your newts (and shouldn't be fed as a staple for generally every specie) , though T. dobrogicus is a slimmer type of newt. If you want to get a little weight on it I would feed worm or waxworms. I have also had some 'issues' with newts I have bought from him but everyone else has had good experiences so I must be unlucky, I would listen to the advice Chinadog has already given and see if Michael has anything to saw about the matter as well.

I'm not sure calling people out on the forums is going to do anyone any good, is it?
I don't know Micheal, but being as he has far more experience with amphibians than I do, I can hardly push my opinion over his. The most likely thing is something stuck in its throat, it could also be a minor deformity, I have come across swollen throats like that in the past, though and both times it was diagnosed as fluid build up due to renal failure.

I meant calling out other members, but it's too late to edit.

Although T.dobrogicus are generally quite thin newts anyway (I would describe mine as long, slim sausages with legs!), you should try get them quite chubby anyway. Especially females, if you plan on breeding it becomes even more important.
I had a couple of newts arrive yesterday and for about half an hour one of them was doing this but then stopped and hasnt done it since, if it's not bloat or an infection it may just have something to do with them settling in. I hope everything goes well with them.

It could be a genetic issue, a nutritional issue, or just a look that will go away. I don't think it is any kind of disease that will be transmitted to the male. As I said in our personal correspondence if it doesn't look better in a week let me know and I will replace it or give you a refund. My best guess is it is genetics and something I missed when packing.

I wasn't implying it was any fault of Michaels. I've gotten newts from you before and had no problem. I was just asking opinions as I've never seen this before... I'm not feeding bloodworms as a staple either. I never said that..

And by no means was I calling anyone out. I guess I didn't think too much about that when answering who I got them from. I'm sorry.
Like I said, I've never had a problem with Michael and would def buy from him again. I'm just trying to see what the lump in her throat could be

I think it's possible that it this is just a matter of the newt settling in, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

I'm sorry I missed the throat thing. I looked to be sure it has all of its toes and seemed fine with a quick once over. I just know how things get twisted around sometimes by a group on the internet. Just email me after a few days and let me know if it looks the same.

I wish all sellers were as reasonable as you, Michael. And, for all you know, this could have developed during transit so you may not have missed it at all
