Speaking with the fish shop owner today he brought to my attention that my golden Axi is pregnant & that i could be expecting eggs soon.

im happy & scared at the same time becuase i got absoloutely no idea what to do & i dont want to stuff things up with this.

The worrying part is i was keeping an eye out for male sperm cones but didnt find any so im not exactly sure what the eggs are meant to look like.

I found this link from another thread which kinda helps but i was hoping someone could post a pic of what the eggs clumps look like in the tank so i know to get them out & keep them seperate.

Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) - Embryonic development

Plan On getting a smallish container filled with an inch or 2 of water and jam pack it with daphnia & brine shrimp!

have just finished scowering through the forum for info & found alot of answer to alot of questions but still a little worried though.

Any advice would be much appreciated for a first time owner.

Thanking you in advance

Hi Type S Tony,

You found our German website! :D

This site offers axolotl.org, under "Breeding" you can see some eggs down near the bottom of the page. They basically hang from every available surface like ornaments on a Christmas tree. Axolotl.org also has lots of helpful info.

Best advice I can give is to think how many axolotls you can house, and only separate these eggs. Leave the rest in the tank and the parents will eat the young.

The female will need something to hold onto to lay, so make sure you have lots of plants (plastic are fine) for her. Also, it can take her 24 hours to lay all of her hundreds of eggs, and when she takes little breaks in between, and afterwards, she will be very hungry so offer her food when you see her sitting still.

Lastly, it is very time consuming to raise the young. Read up so you are prepared.

Exciting and scary, yes. Bringing new life into the world is a grave responsibility, and a fascinating process. It's especially interesting with axolotls because you can watch the embryos develop inside the eggs.

Good luck to you!
