I have recently received some contradicting advice from LPS'. They said that when feeding prawns it's good to feed 1 - 2 prawns (from local supermarket, defrosted before feeding) approx 1 - 2 cms in lenght, once every 3 days.

I used to feed them 1 - 2 prawns every day, and I have to admit that they are much more active since I cut down. But I worry that this is because they are starved?!?

Amount to feed can vary depending on size/age of axie and season/temperature.

How old are your axolotls? If not known how long are they, and how long have you had them?

During the summer/warmer months our adults would eat every 2 days (one would eat constantly given the chance), now it's much colder they eat once or twice a week.

They may be active because of the temperature since it's summer there. Assume your water parameters are ok.

Do you feed anything else, other than prawns?

I've never been a fan of giving mine things like prawn, fish, snitzel, steak. They eat earthworms. We did give them some ox heart/liver strips last year during winter when it got pretty cold to go digging, but as our wormfarms are well established and our kids love wormhunting we're never short of worms and it costs nothing!

Another thing too, much as we love our axolotls I do draw the line at giving things that my family eats. Snitzel, steak, fish and prawns especially can be expensive so they're our treats, worms are free.

Hi Mark. I give mine occasional raw tiger prawns ( posh prawns!!) cut length ways with scissors , one each . I agree with Kapo that earthworms should be a primary food, but if I remember in time while preparing tea/dinner etc i'll slice various raw fat free meat for them, raw fish etc. Was toying with flys but I have witnessed by elderly neighbour spraying his roses etc so will have to avoid this ( I get my worms from the compost bin and as we tend to eat/grow organic they should be safe). My axolotl seem to enjoy variety but prawn is their favourite, I buy a portion from asda and freeze them in pairs...lasts months and defrost quickly!...almost forgot , my two are @ 22cm and 26cm and I feed every other day the equivalent of a prawn...hope this helps

Thanks for the replies.

Prawns are their main diets but I do feed earthworms every now and then. I keep meaning to by a wormery but they seem pretty expensive.

My Axies are approx, 10" & 7" so they are reasonably mature.

I didn't know they could eat prawns! yay something else I've learned! although Mum wont be best impressed as she likes to eat them,.. hehe ;)

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
