I have recently bought a really nice pot in an outdoor shop. It is made of stone and seems like a nice hiding place for my two axolotls. However, I'm dubious about the iron lining on the pot and whether it can be harmful to my axies. Since it is made for outdoor plants AND has a protecting coating, I think it can do no harm to my axolotls but I wanted an expert opinion! I can post a picture of the pot if needed when I get home!

Any metal in an aquarium is generally advised against (as I found out when I asked the same question a few years ago). Metal ions may be released into the water which could be harmful to the animals and prove toxic in the long term. Added to that, if it's an iron coating, it will rust. Avoid the risk and leave it out.

I always avoid metal for this reason but I'm curious, is the lead attached to live plants as a weight actually safe? I always take it off and use other methods but I still don't know the answer :p

Lead isnt really safe probably safer than iron though! I have quiet alot of plants they have clay bases or i weigh down with rocks, but i suppose with lead it doesnt rust but more oxidises and has some kind of (best way to describe it limescale) on the surface. If you clean the lead and KEEP UP water changes you might be okay although i wouldnt advise it.

Iron rusts like hell so i would stay clear. Your best bet would probably stainless steel but its best not to use any metals, the more natural the better i say!

P.S dont flame me on the advice i have given as clearly stated i havent said use it, and i have stated best to stay clear.

Much love.
