My juvenile salamander is acting strange. normally she is a begger and always trys to get food, very active, always hungry acting little tiger but lately, she wants to hide, walks slow and doesn't attempt to eat, she'll even walk away from it. This is weird because somedays she'll eat and somedays she won't and it's starting to worry me that I may be doing something wrong with her. Has anyone had this problem? Does it even sound like a problem to you or is it me just being a worry wart. It's just not like her to act this way. I have two juvenile tiger salamanders in a 10g tank with top soil substrate, hiding spots and a water bowl. I've had them both since they morphed and they've always been together.

How long have you had the salamander? Is that her picture in your avatar?

No that's my male in my picture, i have three total, he's housed in a different tank. I've had her since January of this year. whenever i try and feed her she turns her head away. now she's trying to climb out of her tank. She's acting quite odd and i'm not sure what it could be

What temperature are they at right now? In the past I have noticed mine have gotten sluggish when the temperature reached 75F (too high for tiger salamanders).

It's 62 degrees in their tanks. I forgot to mention before she started acting weird, she had a large bowel movement. and after that eating for her was strained. one day she would take the food then the next few times she would reject it. she's burrowing now but doesn't stay under very long Last night she acted very afraid of me when I got near her tank, which isn't like her because she's always friendly and trying to beg for food or attention. Also I mist their tank daily to help with the temp. I'm really not sure what it could be, it's just bothering me because i feel like i'm doing something to make her uncomfortable and it's upsetting. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me aswell!

Hi,

I would agree that it could be temperature. Additionally, could be that the salamander is molting? I'm not an expert, but these are things that have influenced my sallie in the 16 yrs that I've had him. Proper diet and a clean environment is also key (I'm having issues with that now). Best of luck to your sallie!

Best,
Elise
