Hey everyone,

I actually have a species question for ya. I've been looking online at pictures and descriptions but can't figure out what this lil guy is.
I saw him in a water meter box. He was about 6-7 inches head to tail, has pretty big feet and has the swelled patches behind both eyes and along the crest of his tail. I don't know if the swelling is natural or if it means he's sick in some way. I'm kinda stumped on this one and would appreciate any input anyone has! Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the help, that's definitely it, after looking at more pics! I appreciate it!

Yes its a A. gracile, Northwestern salamander. That swelling behind his eyes isn't swelling at all actually, its his poison glands. The small lighter brown flecks all over his body ( and on the "swelling" part behind his eyes ) is actually "batteries" where the poison is. That also occurs on the tail, but again its not actual swelling. When they get scared or molested they sometimes go into a defense posture, and secrete a sticky white poison that may irritate some peoples skin, so don't touch it!
I would remove him, he most likely doesn't want to be in there and just fell in. Take him out with gloves and put him next to a rock or log that has room for him to crawl under.

Here's a picture of what it looks like when they are in defense posture, its pretty cool. You can also see the poison in the picture.

EDIT: Oh, sorry, I forgot to say that yes, it is a mole salamander.
