I’m not 100% sure if this is fungus on the gills or if that’s how her gills are. They are pretty even on both sides which is the main reason why I’m not sure if it’s a problem. She’s acting completely fine. She’s eating well and pooping well. I have her in a tub and do 100% water changes daily.

Also this picture was taken in a separate much smaller container from her tub. I use it for feeding because bloodworms can get messy.

oh! do you mean the shiny bits on the lower stalks on either side??
also, sorry for the late reply :)

Yea the white part on the lower gills
those are just iridophores!! they’re special pigment cells that may looks shiny from certian angles - nothing to worry about, they’re actually quite pretty :)

My axolotl currently has fungus and also has the shiny bits on his gills. I talked to a fish expert and said that fungus can look like that. Do you have an updated picture that I can see?

Yeah, it's possible I can show you a picture of mine. He is a juvenile wild and shouldn't have any "sparkles" because his parents didn't as well. Do you know if your axolotl is golden or Leucistic? The goldens can have sparkles like that but I haven't seen Lucys with them. Has your axolotl always had the sparkling look or did it slowly appear?

My axie has had them since I got them (At 3 months). The pics from the website I bought them from the other axie's had them as well (their sibling) She also has other sparkling around her belly so I'm pretty sure it's iridophores and genetical. She's a gfp lucy. Her gills look really healthy and she's acting completely normal so I doubt its fungus! Here's a pic

Leucistics can have "sparkles." The gene for iridiphores is dominant, not recessive. You say the parents were melanoid, but is there any chance they were simply hard to see?

Iridiphores do definitely develop further as axolotls age.

It is possible I guess. I could call up the place I got him from and get more information about his parents.
