I have been considering purchasing an axolotl forr some time now and I have a few questions about setup. I currently have a 10 gallon fish tank and a Marineland BioWheel 75 filter. I know that filter is probably too small for an axolotl so I was looking for a recommendation on gph needed for a filter (I plan to disperse the flow so the water current is not high). I live in Northeast US so my House can reach anywhere between 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer so I know I need a fan for the tank. I was thinking of buying eggcrate and cutting it to size for the lid and placing a desk fan facing the water on it. Is there anything wrong with this setup?

Thank you

get a chiller. you wont regret it.
you can run on a sponge filter. thier poop wont get sucked in by the filter. and if it does it probably has to much flow considering its sucking in with that much pressure.
i run 2 canister but the outlet is ran into a bottle with K1 which i poke holes in the bottum. 1 is fine.
sponge filter and cleaning the poop whenever you can will do fine.

How do you recommend setting up a sponge filter and what type?

Thank you

10 gallons is not big enough for an adult, you'll need to upgrade when it reaches 6".

You could do a 10 gallon. The famous Indiana Axolotl Colony kept theirs in small dishes and had several long-lived specimens. The issue with 10 gallon set ups is that you will need to constantly pay attention to water quality. As long as you commit to very frequent water changes you could definitely pull it off.

Good luck!

What do you think about the idea of an egg crate for a cover with a fan blowing on the water to cool it?
