I walked into my apartment tonight to be surprised by my female cynops orientalis with her her back legs wrapped around a piece of foliage, and her nose straight up in the air. I got really excited and went to the tank to take a closer look but in all my excitement I scared her and she swam off. Was this just a fluke, or is there a chance that she may be ready to lay some eggs?

She had been ill a few months ago and I had her in the fridge to help her pull through. I took her out about a month ago and had been feeding her quite heavily. I put her in the tank (a spiffy 40 gallon :D) about a week ago with my male. I never saw any mating dancing, but I did notice that the male was ready. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey firenewt,

I think you might get lucky eventually ;) I don't know why your female got scared though, when I press my nose against the glass, my newts just luck bored (or hungry).

All the best

No eggs yet, though she does seem to be eyeing the modified bags in the tank. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, this will be my 3rd year trying for eggs, and the first year in the big tank. keep your fingers crossed for me!

The male is also a little skittish, They aren't used to having people walking around the tank. I got the female at a local feed store, and I assume she didn't have very much human interaction. As for the male he was kept in a tank in the basement by his previous owner. The only time he saw people is when someone dropped food in. He has come a long way in only a few short months and doesn't hide when I smash my face against the glass to see what's going on, but he does swim to the back. I have 3 juvies in the tanks with the 2 adults and I have purposely started hand feeding so that they are more friendly. (which has worked very well, every time I look in they look back at me expectantly)
