what do you use to get such clear ventral shots?

I use a special small tank for these shots.
The shots are done with a single flash, the most difficult it's to be under the tank (the position is very uncomfortable).
Two important details, the angle between the tank and the flash must be 40° and you must pass the lense in a dark piece of cardboard to avoid reflections.
After that you must modify the photo with photoshop
(or an other program) and keep only the newt.

I have made a photo of the small tank (a small photo it's always better then a long text).

I worked for in Poitiers 6 months a couple of years back, very beautiful country!

I suppose you use an external flash then, an internal flash would be blocked by the cardboard..
Have I misunderstood?

I was also wondering how to make photoshop cut out only the newt from the picture.

I live in the north of Paris (15 km).
I use an external flash remote controlled by the flash of the camera (the light of this one is blocked by the cardboard).
In photoshop I use the magic wand functionality in an fusion overlay (I don't know how to explain this better in english am sorry).
