I finally found pool filter sand, here's the characteristics according to the manufacturer (and translated to english as good as I could)

organic material
< 250
silica sand
> 98 %
I have no idea whats this
< 2 %
Iron
< 0,1 %
Manganese
< 0,1 %
Hardnes in Mohs scale
> = 7
Specific weight
= 2,65 kg/dm3
it doesn't contain mica

Now I am rinsing and rinsing, for how long??

I also put a magnet over it and nothing got stuck, I guess thats good right?

Apparently this sand comes from the coasts of the rivers in the mesopotamian region

Anyway, I hope my axies like it :)

I plan on using sand as a substrate for my axolotl tank, right now it's a bare bottom tank after I had trouble keeping the bottom of the tank clean when I was using river pebbles. My setup is densely planted, so the plants right now are rooted in pots. I hope to make a more natural looking scene this weekend though.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

I will
what I did with the plants (I have bare bottom now) is plant them in jars using sand (actually very fine gravel), they are doing quite well, I have anubias planted like that
and java moss attached to big river rocks
I think I'll keep the pots because the axies will unroot the anubias if I plant them in sand, and the jar seems to work quite well so far

I have anubias rooted in sand and they are doing fine. I guess it depends on the Axolotl whether or not they will rip it up.

and with 3 cm of sand will they root well?
