i have considert using pond soil as a substrate in stead of the sand they have now, as natural lotls live in lakes and river with soil on the bottom. what do you guys think ? any input will help

It's not easy to keep that kind of substrate in an aquarium. It tends to muck up the filter and make the water muddy. If you try it, put in only a thin layer so it doesn't become anaerobic (w/o oxygen, mud tends to become swamp-like and sulfurous).

I have seen naturalistic tanks with just a thin layer of dead leaves on the bottom. That works OK but the leaves must be replaced when they begin to decay. And certain kinds of leaves are unsuitable, as they change the water chemistry too much.
