Pond Plants.

Hi

I live in NZ (obviously), where there is not much in the ponds other than tadpoles and a few tiny pond creatures. I live right by a pond and was wondering if I could put some of the plants from the pond in with my Axolotl if I wash them heaps first...or is this bad for them?

I think it would be a risk personally, for a couple of reasons.

1 You dont really know anything about the quality of the water in the pond next door, diseases it might carry, pests it might have

For the sake of save a few dollars, probably not worth it

2 You are in NZ, so i dont know anything about the laws there, but as you are the eastern isalnds of Australia , it's probably similar.

You might find it is actually illegal to take and keep the fauna & plant life from the pond. Your local waterways authority will probably have info on keeping pests or noxious weeds on their website - you should probably do some research there

I was looking for feeder fish, heard about Gambusia (a type of minnow) dead easy to breed etc. I did some research and found that they are , easy to breed, easy to find in loacal water ways, easy to catch - BUT - will catch you a $10,000 fine if you are found to be keeping them in an aquarium or pond in my home state

there are similar fines for some plant life condsidered a pest / noxious weed.

So, if it was me? Nope, i wouldn't use them because you risk the health of your axie for no good reason (save a few bucks) and you risk fines if in fact you unknowingly break the law (ignorance of the law will not be seen as an excuse for breaking it)

Im sorry I have not idea but Im sure someone will jump in soon. If your worried about the plants dying maybe you could change the water in the bucket and that might give you some more time while you are waiting for somone to answer your question.

Hi

I will not do it due to health risks, but it is not illegal to take things from local waterways. The only thing it is illegal to take is mosquito fish as they are a pest and you are not allowed to breed them. It is legal to take plants, tadpoles, frogs, guppies and other such things from waterways in NZ. I am not sure why that is different to Australia? Perhaps because we have so many ponds etc? Pet shops even pay local kids to bring them guppies

I picked up some plants from a lake in Illinois, Lake Michigan. They are good plants I figured since they grow in cold winter water and negative degree weather. Not a lot of light 4 months a year. So I did it, I put them in a tank with my snails first,none of them died so I decided I'd be safe for my axolotls. They are great plants, I want to go back and pick some more in a few days. The Axolotls love them. I say go for it.

Ok, so everybody has different views....I guess I shall try it and see what happens...the pond is healthy.

Don't forget to quarantine them for at least 30 days prior to putting them in your tank. (Y)
