Hi, potentially silly question but just a thought that i had ...

I've currently got rid of the pebbles in my axie tank leaving them with a bare base while i decide what to go for, i really like the look of slate tiles but was wondering, i wouldnt want to fix them permanently and was thinking about sitting them on a thin layer of sand (to protect the glass tank base)

Just a thought at the moment but would pond liner be ok to put under the slate instead of sand to act as a thin cushion to protect the glass? I've googled but it seems no one has tried this, any thoughts on whether its a workable idea or not would be welcome please?

You could try it I suppose, but given the expense of buying pond liner and then cutting a chunk out of it...

You really needn't worry about protecting the glass unless you regularly take your tank for a ride in the car. If you would prefer to do so anyway, I would skip the pond liner and just make a few "blobs" of silicone on the underside of the slate. Let this cure and then you have soft rubber "legs" for the slate to rest on. Likewise you can bed them in sand, however this will be a pain to clean as you will still get all sorts of stuff trapped under and in between the rocks.

Folks permanently affix them in place as it is easier to clean and keep the water chemistry stable this way.

I suggest one or the other- glue them in place, or just have the slate resting on the bottom for easy removal.

I think there is no harm in using the pond liner. But I agree with Sludge, you could probably do just as well with nothing underneath. I don't think you'll do any harm to glass.

Hi, thanks for the replies - i guess maybe i worry a bit too much about damaging the glass as at 3ft my axie tank is the biggest i've had so far and its my only glass tank (i keep my fish & snails in acrylic tanks) others have no problems using slate so i will try to stop worrying about it - tanks are probably a lot tougher than i think!

Also, having looked at the price of pond liner, you're so right, it does seem a lot to pay to use a small piece if its really not needed!

This is my first axie tank and i've not settled on a final look for it yet - although i guess maybe there never is a final look! At the moment it has a bare base with 1 shop bought log style hide and 2 drain pipe hides (1 L shape, 1 T shape) and some plants (real and fake) my axies seem to like it, they are more active and feeding much better than when they first came to us so i hope that means they're happy & healthy!

I've only had them 2 weeks but i still spend a lot of time just watching them - they're amazing creatures and definitely have different characters, they're great!
