Hello,
I have got 3 fish tanks what are 2 tropical tanks and 1 Axolotes tank. I have been using Tetra Aqua Safe Water Conditioner 1L, what cost me £50 and i have been using it for a long time now and it's getting that i can't keep it up on cost. I have not been using the Aqua Safe Water Conditioner for my Axolotes as the tank is new setup, It was a tropical fish tank at first. So i have been only using it for my tropical fish only!

I was going to use it on all my fish tanks for water change but after looking up info about Aqua Safe Water Conditioner with Axolotes. They say that it can kill your Axolotes over time!
So i have been looking up what's best and seen on forums people saying that they use Interpet Fresh Start No.1 what as not got anything bad for Axolotes. So i have ordered 3 little ones on Ebay what cost me 14.97, what was not that bad i say.

But only today i seen that their is Hagen Nutrafin Aqua Plus 2L for £20, what to me sounds good! After doing some looking up about this item. I was very happy about it and going to get some. But i like to know if this is fine with Axolotes?

One more thing i seen online that may help my external filters on all my tanks is poly filter pads. Is that ok for Axolotes too?

Thank you for your help

You really need to use water conditioner (also called 'dechlorinator') if you have chlorine in your water. It's harmful for axolotls and could potentially be deadly.

Aquasafe is fine. As are all the other dechlorinators. I wouldn't use any that 'lock' or 'neutralize' ammonia, but all the simple dechlorinators are basically the same.

That being said, that's an EXTREMELY expensive bottle of dechlorinator! I think I paid $10 for my 1l bottle.

Poly filter pads are fine. Most things (except 'medication') that are fish-safe are also axolotl-safe.

Thank you very much for your reply.
Do you think it's best for me to go for Nutrafin Aqua Plus now on for my fish and Axolotes? I'm trying to cut down on cost as it's getting that i can't keep up with the 1L Tetra Aqua Safe Water.

The Axolotes tank is a new setup what is a 200L tank. I taken the old water from their old 64L tank and put that into the 200L with the old filter running in it for about 1week.

They are doing fine init and eating with out any problems so i think i done the right think but only coming to do water change now that i need to know what's best for them.

Thank you for your help

I personally have found that the Nutrafin with aloe is not the best for my axies - I have had nothing but trouble with fungus since I started using it, and I found the dosing to be different to what it said on the bottle - I had to use more than stated. It's supposed to be axie-safe though. I use Reef De-Chlor Aquaria - just a simple sodium thiosulphate prepration.

If your filter was kept running without drying out it should be fine, it may take a few days to catch up with th extra water volume but your cycle will be OK. Old water and old filter topped up with fresh water is the best way to get a new tank going

Thank you for your reply, i think i will try that stuff out and use Nutrafin Aqua Plus for my fish only.

Thank you

Saying that i think i try this Interpet Fresh Start No.1 first what people say is good for Axolotes before trying anything more as i ordered some. But thank you for your info and will try it if Interpet Fresh Start No.1 is not the one for me.

I am getting a little confused by this post, so i'd like to ask a question...

It is my understanding that you can use any declorinator (water conditioner) in your axolotl tank...

So what is 'extra' in the ones that can not be used? Is there an actual ingredient that I should be making sure is not in my conditioner? I am using stress coat "fish and tap water conditioner"... Always have in all my tanks, but I am relatively new to Axolotls

Kaysie, do you know what ingredient is used to 'lock' or 'neutralize' ammonia?

Thanks :D

Some dechlorinators have aloe in them, which tends to gunk up the filter and decorations if you use too much. Other than that, I'm not too sure.

You can use any dechlorinator you want in your axolotl tank. None of them are harmful, but some have side effects. Added aloe can 'gunk' up your tank. I had a slime problem for a while, but the influx of snails seems to help (*eye roll*). Some are foamy, some will alter the chemistry in a way that keeps your bacteria from being able to convert waste as necessary.

I don't know which chemicals are the ammonia binding agents; I never was that good at chemistry.
