Please help!

I rescued this salamander from my mom who never took care of him. He is not eating and had an ulcer on his face that has now healed. I am unsure what is wrong with Boris, but his eyes are not doing well. I put him in a 40g tank(he was in a 15g) with fresh bedding and clean water. He seems to be moving again after being in the new tank, but I am still afraid for him. He was only being fed wax worms and never had his bedding changed ,nor his water. The photos are hard to look at, but he needs some advice. I read that silvadene is good to use but he needs to be diagnosed and there are no herp vets where I am.

He is moving a lot more since he has been in the new tank. He seems to still know his name when I talk to him (we would stare at each other for about 15 minutes and I would keep calling his name in a goofy voice when he was younger) His head is up and he is bathing quite a lot. I hope this is the worst it will get and he gets better. He got a fogger to keep the humidity up and it seems to be doing well.

The light was also never turned off and so the light has been rid of until he has more places to hide and a lot of plants.

is he eating? There are some great resources on here about food. Are you using dechlorinated water?

if he's eating, and no sign of infection (like pus) I'd leave him to heal now he's in new substrate & fresh water.

I should say I'm a newbie when it comes to caudates, I can only say what I'd do. Fingers crossed for him.

Are you trying live foods? My newts are fully aquatic so I'm more familiar with feeding in water, but mine choose live worms over frozen every time. If you can get a whiteworm culture you can grow your own, or try digging up some earthworms.

It could also be that he can't see the food if his eyes are damaged, you could try using tweezers to wave the food in front of his nose.

Him moving around is a great sign though.

He has always eaten live food, and I got night crawlers for him. He liked being fed by hand.

Today Boris has passed away. He will be buried in with my pond plants so he will always be with me. He was over ten years old and he is no longer in distress.

man i’m sorry, he sounds like he had a rough life but was in good hands toward the end. thanks for rescuing him and doing your best, even if he didn’t make it

I am sorry I did not get to this sooner, but I do not think I could have recommended anything better than what you did. Unfortunately I’m sure he would have been permanently blinded, but You really did all you could. I’m really sorry about his passing
