Hello!I'm new here!I've doing a research for salamanders/newts recently and this site has been very helpful to me.But I have a problem: A friend of mine gave me a salamander as a present, but no one knows-not even the pet shop owner-what species it belongs in. I would be grateful if someone could find that out by these photos! They aren't so good, I know...Thanks anyway!
Description: It's colour is brownish with black spots all over the body and an orange line on both sides and under the tail.It also has a big flat head.It doesn't go out (on land) and it takes breaths of air every 5-10 minutes.

Thanks a lot both of you!!I checked out the link you gave me and I believe you are right! That must be it.But now I'm worried because I found out that it gets quite big...!I'll do my best and I'll find any info I can about it!Unfortunately here in Greece and especially in Crete-where I stay-they don't know anything about animals and reptiles etc.I have two turtles and I learned about them from internet.I even ordered turtle docks from US and I payed twice their price...Anyway!Thanks again!

Hi Emmanoulea....

100% it is Pleurodeles Waltl. Spanish ribbed newt.

Greetings from Germany

Andy

Michael what do you mean? I assume you posted in the wrong thread!
Andy thanks a lot for your help! I'm now sure it's a spanish ribbed newt. Luckily with the help of this site and people like you I found out. In the pet shop they sold it as a fire-belly newt...!!! Anyway I'll post some pics of him(?)when I find a better cam!

If only the chat were working, then it would be easier to alert moderators to this nuisance, so they could delete Michael's post.

I've deleted it. Good luck with your Pleurodeles! They are great newts.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
